Editing Crop Type Details

If you have previously defined your Crop Types, you'll know that they contain multiple different fields that are used for automatic calculations when creating plantings. Things like days to maturity, expected harvest amount per acre, estimated values of your harvest, and many more. You might want to update some of these values from time to time, especially after examining crop data after a season. You can easily to this by navigating to the crop type and selecting details.

Note: Updates you make will apply to new plantings you create; existing plantings will retain their original data based on the crop type values from when the planting was created. You can always edit and individual planting to update dates, values, and more.

You make any changes you need to these details to better adjust your next round of plantings. Here are some examples of what you might investigate and update after a season ends.

  • After you germinate your seeds in your greenhouse for your Start in Trays type plantings, you might recalculate your estimated germination rate to better calculate the number of trays and starts you'll need next year. Farmbrite can automatically calculate these amounts when creating a planting based off of this crop type value.

  • Perhaps you are experimenting with different spacing to see if giving this crop more room to grow will increase yields. You can update the plant spacing and row spacing to have those dimensions be used the next time you create a planting.

  • Maybe after growing a new variety for a season you realize that it blooms and matures faster than the seed packet details said to expect. You can update the Days to Maturity and Days to Flower to better prepare for your harvest next year. These new values will be used to automatically calculate harvest dates for your next plantings and will thus show more accurately on your crop plan.

  • After reaping a bountiful harvest, you might edit the expected yield fields to better calculate your expected amount to be harvested in your next round of plantings. This can help you budget better and more accurately calculate what you might get from your future  plantings.

  • How about updating the text fields for Planting details and Pruning details? You've worked with this crop for at least a season, and might have great advice for your future self to reference!

  • If you took great photos of the crop last year, you can update the primary photo/icon of the crop type to show your hard work from last season.

  • Need to track something new that you don't see here? Create a custom field and start tracking it now

There are many other fields you can update, these are just a few examples.

Bulk Updating Details via Import

You might also use the Crop Type Import feature to update all of your crop types at once. You can export your crop type data first, and then work to update the values for all of them in a spreadsheet. From there you can import that updated sheet, and choose the option to Update Existing Records during the import process. Your crop types will all be updated at once, saving you time from editing them individually.
